Georgia, Notre Dame reportedly lobbying for earlier kickoff time for Sugar Bowl
Georgia and Notre Dame — which had their Sugar Bowl Playoff clash pushed back 24 hours to Thursday night in the aftermath of the tragedy in New Orleans that killed at least 10 — have made requests to local New Orleans authorities to play the game earlier in the day on Thursday, according to a report by Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger.
According to the report, active discussion is continuing to take place regarding the rescheduled kickoff time, which is likely determined by local authorities in New Orleans and ESPN.
The College Football Playoff quarterfinal was originally scheduled to kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday night from the Superdome before the suspected terrorist attack in New Orleans in the early hours of Wednesday. A decision was made on Wednesday afternoon to push the game back 24 hours to 8:45 p.m. ET on Thursday night.
But now, according to Dellenger, that rescheduled time is being discussed and could change again.
The Georgia football team is on “lockdown” at its team hotel in New Orleans, according to a report by ESPN’s Laura Rutledge during an appearance on ABC News on Wednesday afternoon.
Both Georgia and Notre Dame have put out statements that their football traveling party are all safe and accounted for in New Orleans.
A final kickoff time is expected to be announced in the coming hours.
