Back on May 22, Georgia freshman QB D’Wan Mathis complained to the Bulldogs’ training staff about having headaches.

What followed was something no one could have predicted. Mathis underwent emergency brain surgery to remove fluid around his brain.

Now, as he recovers from the surgery, it seems things are progressing nicely. His father confirmed to DawgNation on Tuesday that Mathis has been cleared to work out with the team, which is surprising at this stage of his recovery:

“The doctors are moving D’Wan along slowly, but we realize D’Wan could have died with the sort of operation we had, so we feel very blessed,” Terence Mathis, D’Wan’s father, told DawgNation on Tuesday.

“The doctor said the fact he’s being cleared to work out just six weeks after surgery is amazing, and that it typically doesn’t happen like this.”

Terence Mathis said he’s very thankful for everyone at Georgia acting quickly to save his son:

“We thank God for Ron Courson’s expertise and his medical team, because without them I don’t think all of this would have been possible for D’Wan,” Terence Mathis said. “I believe Georgia saved my son’s life.”

What Mathis’s status is for the upcoming season is unknown at this time, but the important thing is that he makes a full recovery.
