Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey is one of the Bulldogs’ key contributors offensively. On Friday evening, though, his work off the field was put in the spotlight.

McConkey is the winner of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy, tabbed as “college football’s premier award for community service.

“While Ladd is a two-time National Champion, and one the most accomplished wide receivers in the country, his selflessness and commitment to make a difference in the lives of others is truly remarkable,” Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and the award’s namesake, said in a statement. “With most major awards based on athletic achievement and statistics, it’s a privilege to recognize him for his philanthropic efforts, as Ladd continues to make a meaningful impact in his surrounding communities.”

McConkey was honored for his work across several community organizations, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. According to the Wuerffel Trophy organization, he also works with the university’s L.E.A.D. (Leadership Education and Development) program, “where he connects children with the joy of reading and regularly assists programs that support food insecurity in underserved communities”.

McKonkey, the 1st Georgia player to receive the award, will be honored at the College Football Hall of Fame on Feb. 17.
