Georgia entered spring football this season with a “problem” many teams would love to have, they have two former five-star prospects eager to take snaps under center. Often times, this type of competition can bring out animosity, but incumbent sophomore starter Jacob Eason doesn’t see it that way. In fact, Eason has embraced the challenge of competing against early enrollee Jake Fromm this spring.

During his Thursday media availability, Eason seemed at ease while going through his second spring in Athens. After arriving last year with incredible hype and expectations, Eason is now the veteran of the quarterback room for Georgia. Based on his latest interaction with the media, Eason has grown up quite a bit in a year’s time, as he played off any and all competition — manufactured or real — as a good thing for the team and every individual.

“There’s always going to be competition, no matter who’s there,” Eason said. “I feel like Jake is coming in, he’s a great kid like I said before, I’m looking forward to the next couple of years with him.”

It’s fair to question whether there is a legitimate competition for the starting reps in Athens, perhaps the spring game will give a better indication of how far along Fromm has come in a short period, but even head coach Kirby Smart acknowledges Eason has “come a long way” from last season.

Considering talent has never been Eason’s issue, and he has a year’s head start on the Georgia playbook and playing in the SEC, it’s hard to see him getting beaten out by a true freshman. If nothing else, Fromm’s main contribution to the team this season may prove to be helping improve Eason as an all-around player. Something even the sophomore quarterback admits is a possibility.

“I think competition makes everyone better. Having that guy there that’s pushing you, that’s something you are definitely aware of,” Eason said. Ultimately it’s on yourself.”
