In a matter of just a few days, former 5-star recruit Brenton Cox went from being reportedly dismissed at Georgia to reportedly in the NCAA’s transfer portal to showing up on Florida’s official roster.

On Saturday, Georgia coach Kirby Smart commented on Cox’s transfer.

“Brenton chose to withdraw from the University of Georgia … He’s now at another SEC institution,” Smart told reporters. “We wish him all the best.”

That’s about all you can expect a coach to say on a situation like that. It won’t do much to settle the back-and-forth between the two rival fanbases and doesn’t spell out why Cox left UGA, but it’s probably the last Smart will say on the matter for a while.

Florida beat reporter Will Sammon of The Athletic appeared on “The Paul Finebaum Show” Friday to discuss Cox’s transfer. He noted that Cox is unlikely to receive an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA, but that the NCAA has been unpredictable when it comes to granting those waivers. He also speculated that Cox will be more of a pass-rush specialist in Todd Grantham’s defense. If Cox has to sit in 2019, we probably won’t hear much about him in the leadup to November’s Cocktail Party, but he’ll likely be talked about a lot ahead of next year’s clash in Jacksonville.
