Kirby Smart comments on the impact of losing Brock Bowers to injury
Georgia took a huge blow over the weekend as star tight end Brock Bowers went down with an ankle injury that will put him out 4-6 weeks.
Bowers had been one of the best offensive weapons for the Bulldogs, recording 567 yards and 4 touchdowns before the injury. Now Georgia will have to manage without him for a few weeks, and the Bulldogs can’t afford a slip up if they want to reach the College Football Playoff.
Kirby Smart didn’t shy away from speaking on the significance of the injury, but he believes his team is prepared to manage without Bowers on the field.
Any time you lose a player of Brock’s magnitude, it’s significant,” Smart said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “I think you have — we have contingency plans each week for every position, it’s not just Brock’s. It’s every position, what if. You got to have what ifs in this league, there’s a lot of injuries, it’s a tough, physical sport. That’s one of the things we always look at and fortunately it happened mid-game or I guess early in the game in the first half, so we have other answers and we’ll have to go to that this week and really it’s not like we’re asking one person to make that difference, we’re going to make collective gains of what we’re looking for from everybody so it’s a collective effort.”
Luckily for the Bulldogs, they’ll get a bye week this week before getting into a tough stretch of games against Florida, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Getting Bowers back to 100% will be a priority for Georgia, but the Bulldogs will also have to learn to run the offense through other players in the meantime.
