Kirby Smart expands on JT Daniels' expectations: 'We're excited to see him do what he does'
It appears Georgia will add another quarter to the mix this week officially, as Georgia coach Kirby Smart further clarified on Wednesday that Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels would play against Auburn.
“Really the same thing with JT, he’s continuing to work, he’s doing a great job, glad he’s cleared,” Smart said on the SEC coaches media teleconference. “He’s able to play now. We’re excited to see him do what he does.”
It also appears that last week’s starter, D’Wan Mathis will see the field, too.
“D’Wan is working, he is getting better, he’s learned from his mistakes,” Smart said. “Trying to get the players around him better.”
Mathis suffered from problems around the team, from penalties to a failed third down. “So he did a lot of good things early on there, and we just never could put good things back to back,” Smart said earlier in the week. “Every drive he had came to a stop for some reason or another.”
It’s unclear how many quarterbacks Georgia will play on Saturday, and if Stetson Bennett IV is in that group. He helped steer the offense back on track in the Arkansas win.
Bennett had a lot of composure and handled the pocket and protections well, Smart said.
“Stetson has seen a lot of football in his time,” Smart said on Monday. “The stuff he sees from our defense day in day out, taking all the reps last year, he’s very calm and poised.
What happens to Mathis if he starts again, or gets significant snaps, and flops again? Does that terminally damage his confidence.
Seems to me that we have no clue which qb is going to start and thats intentional on Kirbys part. Make AU do all the extra prep you can. Seems like a good plan.
I don’t think this is a situation we’re holding the cards is a good idea
Just prepare for an average to below average qb and you should have all 3 options covered.
Yep. Until UGA has a clear starter, play it close to the vest and force the opposition to prepare for 3 different styles of QB play and offensive packages. The smart move.
