Kirby Smart spoke about Florida State’s roster situation after Georgia’s 63-3 win over the Noles in the Orange Bowl on Saturday night.

UGA’s win is the most lopsided victory in the history of college football bowl games. It came against a Florida State roster that was decimated by opt-outs and transfers after a season in which the Noles went 13-0 and won the ACC.

Smart didn’t blame FSU’s individual players for making the choices they did, instead saying that “college football” needs to take a look at how to fix this problem. Smart said the issues with bowl season will still exist in 2024 and beyond after the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams.

“College football has got to decide what they want,” Smart said. “And I know things are changing, things are gonna change next year. But you know what? There’s gonna still be bowl games outside of [the 12-team playoff]. People have to decide what they want and what they really want to get out of it.

“Because it’s really unfortunate for those kids on that sideline that had to play that game and didn’t have their full arsenal. It affected the game. 100 percent.”

Here’s video of Smart’s comments:

Bowl game opt-outs have increased in recent years as more and more college football players have decided to begin preparations for the NFL Draft or enter the transfer portal rather than play in bowl games.

Georgia is now responsible for the 2 largest margins of victory in bowl games in college football history.
