Kirk Herbstreit isn’t sold on Georgia as the No. 1 team in the country entering Week 9. Despite a No. 1 ranking and back-to-back national championships, Herbstreit had the Bulldogs at No. 2 on his list of College Football Playoff picks.

Instead of Georgia, Herbstreit went with Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan program at No. 1 at this point in the season. Asked to explain that pick, Herbstreit pointed to a weaker schedule for the Wolverines but an overall dominant stretch of football for the program.

“For me, it has everything to do with they have not played the schedule that the others have played, but it’s impossible to look at them and say they have not been the most dominant team,” Herbstreit claimed. “They can’t help who they’re playing, but if you look at the offense, the defense and the special teams, they’re a veteran team from a year ago. Made it to the Playoff, got knocked out by TCU, most of that team is back this year.

“You expect them to do what they’re doing, and they’re doing it and maybe that much more. I think they’ve just been the most consistent brand from Week 1 coming into Week 9. So that’s why I put them just a little bit ahead of Georgia.”

It’s hard to dispute the dominance of Michigan as a team that has scored at least 31 points without allowing more than 10 points in every game this season. However, the Wolverines are also dealing with an NCAA investigation into allegations of illicit sign-stealing.
