Having a star player go No. 1 overall in any draft is an immediate boon to any program, and coach Tom Crean hopes that’s the case for Georgia basketball.

Anthony Edwards was taken No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft on Wednesday night by the Minnesota Timberwolves. That gives Crean a clear vision to sell to recruits, something he’s ready to do.

“If your dreams are real and your agenda is real, and if you want to come in and help build a place up, it can happen here,” Crean said during a Thursday Zoom call, per Dawg Nation. “If you want to get better and be developed and play in front a of great university, it’s here. There’s no one that can say your greatest dream can’t be realized at Georgia.”

Crean and Georgia currently hold the No. 32-ranked recruiting class according to 247Sports, which is No. 8 in the SEC.

Edwards became the 11th straight one-and-done player to be the No. 1 pick. He averaged 19.1 points for the Bulldogs, tops among all freshman.

“As far as just being excited and just being happy and ready to go and ready to work and ready to get there as soon as possible, those emotions were overwhelming with just my mother and grandmother being there,” Edwards said, per the Associated Press. “I mean, it was just a dream come true and just a blessing.”
