The Kentucky Wildcats were one of the pleasant surprises of the 2016 SEC season, earning their first bowl berth since 2010 by going 7-5 in the regular season before losing to Georgia Tech in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

However, SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy — the former Alabama quarterback — wasn’t impressed by what the Kentucky defensive line, particularly former 5-star recruit Matt Elam, did in 2016.

At SEC Media Days on Tuesday, he ripped into Elam and the Wildcats’ defensive line, as you can see in the video below:

“It was an embarrassing effort,” he says. “The linebackers covered their bases an awful lot, who are really good and played their tails off. But this defensive line, they need to be issued a challenge.

“It was an embarrassing effort last year, particularly by former 5-star Matt Elam, who was lazy and as underachieving a player as I’ve seen in this league in some time.”

Now, it’s up to Elam to respond. We’ll see if he counters McElroy’s claims on Twitter or if he does it on the field this fall.
