Brian Kelly provided an update on Jayden Daniels after the quarterback took a violent hit against Alabama, sending him into concussion protocol.

Alabama’s Dallas Turner hit resulted in the linebacker’s helmet making contact with Daniels’ head and he had to miss the remainder of the game, which Alabama led by 2-touchdowns at the time.

Kelly said while Daniels has already made progress, he will be day-to-day leading up to the Florida game on Saturday.

“I would consider him day-to-day,” Kelly said in his Monday press conference. “He’s going through the injury protocol and he’s made improvements. But this is a process that we’ll just have to see how it plays out day-to-day, but I can tell you that he’s made some progress.”

The play resulted in a great deal of controversy. Turner was called for roughing the passer, but many believed the play should have resulted in targeting given the helmet-to-helmet contact.

Kelly offered his opinion on the play, saying that he believes it should have been targeting. He also mentioned that LSU sent the play to SEC offices for review.

“We want to protect the quarterback, and certainly there was a penalty on the play,” Kelly said. “Targeting is looked at by the replay officials. They had plenty of time, I think we even went into, there was a timeout there as well. There was plenty of time to look at it, they must have felt that there wasn’t targeting. We sent it into the league office, because we felt like it checked all the boxes, but again, we want to protect the quarterback.”
