Brian Kelly praises QB Garrett Nussmeier: 'He's on track to throw 45-50 TDs'
Brian Kelly appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show Monday to discuss the Tigers’ hot start to the season on offense.
The Tigers fell in Week 1 of the season to USC, but Nussmeier was far from the first to blame. He threw for a pair of touchdowns and just over 308 yards despite the losing effort.
Nussmeier looked even better in Week 2 against Nicholls, throwing for 6 touchdowns and over 300 yards once again. The LSU QB has thrown for more touchdowns than any other quarterback in the SEC and he sits 3rd in total passing yards.
Here’s what Kelly had to say on the Paul Finebaum Show:
“He’s on track to throw 45-50 TDs and we probably are going to need them all.”

Kelly said that LSU is going to need all of Nussmeier’s touchdowns this season, perhaps a nod to the injury of running back John Emery, who played very well against USC before being lost to the season with an ACL tear.
LSU has an interesting matchup on the docket this weekend. The Tigers travel to Columbia to face off against South Carolina, which looked terrible in Week 1 but rebounded with a convincing win over Kentucky in Lexington. The Gamecocks made UK QB Brock Vandagriff look like a high schooler, but they’ll have more of a challenge this weekend against Nussmeier.
The game is set to kick off at Noon on ABC next Saturday.
I wouldnt factor in too many TD throws based on nicholls…
“Kelly said that LSU is going to need all of Nussmeier’s touchdowns this season, perhaps a nod to the injury of running back John Emery, who played very well against USC before being lost to the season with an ACL tear.”
More like a nod to DT Jacobian Guillory, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon. He was our best DT, and the defense is going to be even worse without him.
No Heisman, no line, no defense, no recruits, no chance. I told you over and over all Spring and Summer.
I hate to say it so early but it appears that LSU is in trouble this year. A weak, already injured D line, a continuation of the vulnerable secondary, and an O line that may not have the chops as advertised. This weekend will tell a lot.
Kelly doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from here on out. He’s already made bone-headed decisions each game and HP is still underperforming. As far as that goes, who gives a rat’s arse about how his preparation now will make him better in the NFL, turn that dude loose and let him do what he knows how to do. Let the NFL fix whatever they need to fix.
You can’t establish the run game if you don’t have a run game in the first place. After you see it’s not working in the game, go back to what was working (USC game). Fix it in practice and just win the game in the moment for Pete’s sake. I’m not sharing Kelly’s strategy.
Nussmeier and the receivers are the bright spot. Lean on that, Kelly. With any luck Kelly will commit to the pass game even if forced to by the surging gamecocks.
Congratulations, you are the first to figure it out and post it.
