Brian Kelly left Notre Dame to take the LSU job at the end of last season, prior to the Fighting Irish’s bowl game.

But, his Notre Dame past is still a topic of discussion, particularly when it comes to former Irish QB (and now-Boston College star QB) Phil Jurkovec.

In an interview with Boston.com, Jurkovec criticized the culture in South Bend under Kelly:

“I was disappointed by some stuff while I was there,” Jurkovec said. “The football team and culture is not what people think it to be. I met a lot of great people. They do a lot of good in the world. It’s a mixed bag. I’m glad I went there, and I’m glad I left.”

While he was going through some hard times as the backup quarterback, Jurkovec said Kelly promised his parents he’d talk to their son, but that never happened:

“Kelly basically lied to their faces about what he would do, how he would talk to me and explain things about the future,” Jurkovec said. “He basically lied to my parents, so after that, they were done with him.”

Jurkovec then said coaches treated people badly, but also questioned their experience with coaching:

“It wasn’t as much about how they treated people — because I think they also treated people very badly, very poorly, some of the coaches there — but it was more about their lack of experience and coaching,” Jurkovec said.

It’s safe to say Jurkovec is glad to be away from Notre Dame and playing at Boston College. He’s a quarterback who is drawing some 2023 NFL Draft buzz, so we’ll see if he can finish his college career with a bang this fall.
