Danny Kanell was not thrilled with one aspect of the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll that was released Monday. In particular, Kanell was fired up about Florida State’s ranking in relation to one SEC program.

That program is LSU, a team fans likely remember Florida State beating last season. However, the Tigers were ranked No. 5 with FSU coming in at No. 8 on the Coaches Poll.

“Let me just lay something out here. And of course they play Week 1. Like, we’ll get to see this unfold,” said Kanell. “And this is where if LSU beats Florida State, LSU fans will have a field day.”

Kanell went on to explain that both teams lost 3 games a season ago in the regular season. He also made the case every loss for Florida State came at the hands of a bowl-eligible team that was ranked at the time of the matchup.

As for LSU, the Tigers’ other regular season losses came in a blowout defeat against Tennessee and on the road against a 5-7 Texas A&M program.

“But, they played each other last year. How did that go? Who won that game? Florida State. So they played each other, and Florida State won that game. They both had 3 losses, of course we just mentioned one of them,” Kanell explained. “Florida State lost 3 games to top 25 opponents all within reason. None of them were blowouts, they were at least competitive in the 4th quarter… Those are their three losses to top 25 opponents at the time who were all teams that went bowling.”

Considering the offseason Florida State had and the amount of returning production, Kanell sees no reason LSU should be ranked higher. He labeled the Tigers getting the preseason edge on the poll as the latest example of “brand bias” in favor of the SEC.

“Why is LSU ranked ahead of Florida State other than anything but a brand bias towards LSU and the SEC?” Kanell questioned.
