LSU true freshman quarterback Garrett Nussmeier received an extended audition during the Tigers’ last game as he saw extended playing action against Arkansas.

That will be the last time he’ll see the football field this season, though, as Ed Orgeron revealed on Thursday night. Another true freshman, Matt O’Dowd, will serve as the backup to Max Johnson in the final 2 games of the regular season.

Nussmeier’s appearance against the Razorbacks was his 4th game, meaning that he would no longer be eligible for a redshirt if he were to appear in another. He was 18-of-31 for 179 yards and a touchdown but did throw 2 interceptions. Nussmeier had also played against McNeese State, Central Michigan, and Ole Miss.

The Tigers are 4-6 and need to win their remaining games in order to become bowl-eligible. They host Louisiana-Monroe Saturday night, a 9 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN2.
