Derrius Guice might receive less of a workload originally thought heading into 2017.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show Monday afternoon and brought up Guice’s touches. The Heisman contending running back carried the ball 27 times last week for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers’ victory over BYU.

Some think that the Louisiana native didn’t get the ball enough times in the game. For Coach O, the load may have been too much.

Orgeron knows how tough it is to stay healthy as a starting running back in the SEC. Just last season, he watched star Leonard Fournette deal with the lingering injury that kept him sidelined most of the second half of the season.

Guice has already logged 276 plays from scrimmage in his career, which includes 261 rushing attempts. It is apparent that the LSU staff is going to monitor his usage moving forward, making sure not to overextend him. Tiring him out could be a disaster for LSU football in 2017.
