Experiment over: New England Patriots cut former LSU QB Danny Etling
A position change wasn’t enough to keep Danny Etling in the mix to make the New England Patriots. The former LSU quarterback was waived by the Patriots, Field Yates of ESPN reported.
Labeled an experiment by some, Etling attracted some attention early in training camp as he attempted to make a change from quarterback to wide receiver. This is the second straight August that Etling was cut after he was a seventh-round pick of the Patriots in 2018. Last season, he started the transition in practice from QB to wide receiver, MassLive.com reported.
Etling received praise from backup QB Brian Hoyer, who called him one of New England’s best scout-team wideouts last year, MassLive.com reported. Rookie Jarrett Stidham, a fourth-round draft pick, bumped Etling off the depth chart at QB. But in his final practice Monday, Etling reportedly had a bad day and let a Stidham pass through his hands for an interception in a team drill.
Etling saw only two offensive snaps in the Patriots’ preseason opener last week in Detroit, and didn’t make a catch.
The Patriots have waived QB/WR Danny Etling, per source. Etling begun working at WR this offseason to try to increase his roster chances.
