Danny Etling’s first stint on the Atlanta Falcons’ active roster was a short one.

On Monday, the Falcons waived Etling two days after the former LSU quarterback was signed. Etling was Atlanta’s backup quarterback for its loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, as Matt Schaub started in place of the injured Matt Ryan.

Etling is in his second professional season, but he has yet to make his NFL debut. He was selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 2018 draft, then spent the whole season on their practice squad.

During this year’s training camp, Etling began a transition to wide receiver, but he was waived by the Patriots on Aug. 13. The next day, Etling was claimed by the Falcons and went back to quarterback. He was signed to Atlanta’s practice squad at the end of the preseason.

It’s likely that Etling will return to the Falcons’ practice squad now that his brief time on the active roster is over. However, if Ryan or Schaub get injured later in the season, then Etling will probably rejoin the roster and potentially have an opportunity at making his NFL debut.

Etling was at LSU from 2015-17, redshirting his first season after transferring following two seasons at Purdue. He played in 24 games for the Tigers from 2016-17, passing for 4,586 yards and 27 touchdowns.
