Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The chances of being fooled a third time appear to be over for Steve Spurrier and South Carolina.

Four-star defensive end Arden Key who has twice been committed to the Gamecocks, announced a pledge to LSU on Monday during the final hour of Fox Sports South’s ‘The NEW College Football Show: Next Class 2015’, a sizeable pickup for the Tigers and new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele two days before signing day.

Key claims he made his decision Monday morning by drawing the names of both programs out of a hat, but his commitment falls squarely on the efforts of assistants Ed Orgeron and Frank Wilson. Key took an official visit to Baton Rouge after the dead period ended and recently had an in-home visit with Orgeron that influenced his choice.

Key is LSU’s second pass rusher of this year’s class — three-star Isaiah Washington’s the other. His announcement boosts LSU to 20 commits overall, a group currently ranked fourth in the SEC behind Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia and eighth overall in the country.

Key has developed an outstanding relationship over the last several seasons with South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, who handles the greater Atlanta area for the Gamecocks, but it wasn’t to be.

It was the second swing and a miss of the night for the Gamecocks who also lost out on three-star cornerback commit Damon Arnette (Ft. Lauderdale) who flipped his decision to Ohio State. Arnette was the ninth decommitment of this year’s class for South Carolina.

Wednesday is the first day prep seniors can sign binding letters of intent.
