The last time teams ranked Nos. 1 and 2 faced off in the regular season, LSU and Alabama were fighting for the 2011 SEC West crown.

The same situation is playing out this season, and one reporter believes the College Football Playoff selection committee could set up another showdown of top-ranked teams.

In a Tuesday appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show, ESPN’s Heather Dinich said she wouldn’t be surprised if the committee ranked LSU second in its initial CFP rankings that debut next Tuesday. Dinich, who has closely covered the Playoff and its committee, is confident Alabama will be No. 1, though she expects the debate for No. 2 to be hotly contested.

Though Clemson and Notre Dame are undefeated and ranked above one-loss LSU in the AP Top 25, Dinich argued that the No. 4 Tigers’ strength of schedule makes them a contender to be slotted at second in the CFP rankings.

In 2011, top-ranked LSU traveled to face the No. 2 Crimson Tide in a battle of undefeated squads. The Tigers eked out a 9-6 win in overtime but ultimately lost to Alabama in the BCS national championship game that year.

Do you think this season’s LSU squad is deserving of No. 2?
