At 240 pounds, people aren’t supposed to be this fast.

Sure, Leonard Fournette’s 240 pounds — the heaviest he’s reportedly ever been — turned plenty of heads at the NFL Combine weigh in session and not necessarily in a good way. He also recorded the second worst vertical jump for a running back since 2000 at 28.5 inches. But his 4.51 40-yard dash certainly helped his cause.

To put that into perspective, FSU running back Dalvin Cook, who gets to top speed in about two steps, ran a 4.5 40 in his first attempt. Fournette basically ran the same time carrying 20 more pounds.

That’s a big man moving.

Plenty of questions will arise between now and the NFL Draft on just how high Fournette should be drafted and how much value he adds, but when healthy, he could be the most dynamic player in the draft. Obviously, the health is concerning to some because he missed several games due to an ankle injury in 2016.

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said about Fournette prior to his 40-yard dash, “It alarmed me he showed up to the combine at 240.” He also added the 28.5 inch vertical and the DNP (did not participate) in the broad jump were a “red flag.”

But Fournette’s 40-time essentially quieted some of the critics, including Mayock. “That’s good enough for me,” Mayock boasted after Fournette ran.
