Report: Herman may not be available for LSU
Immediately following LSU’s Sept. 25 announcement that Les Miles was out as head coach, Houston coach Tom Herman was talked about as Miles’ possible replacement.
A new report suggests that a school without an official vacancy may have scooped up Herman before LSU could pry him from Houston:
Big rumor today is that Tom Herman to #Longhorns is "all but offical." Reliable sources saying what has been suspected for awhile now.

Texas coach Charlie Strong has not been fired, but reports earlier this month stated Strong was “very close” to losing his job. In an interesting twist, Strong has been linked to the LSU vacancy.
Meanwhile, interim coach Ed Orgeron is doing his best to keep the Tigers from looking at outside options to replace Miles. LSU is 3-0 since Orgeron took over.
Tom Herman’s resume’ isn’t looking quite as good after losses to Navy, and SMU.
Or, am I the only one thinking that?
Agree – but compared to Strong…?
I’m not near as excited about Herman as I once was. His team has two suspect losses, which tells me he is not much of a motivator. LSU will have no interest in Strong at all. Not sure what he brings to the table at this point.
It’s cuz dude has been focused behind the scenes with the contract negotiations with Texas
That’s sad if true. Texas could be liable for tampering if they didn’t get UHs permissible to talk to him. Also would reflect negatively only Herman for not being fully engaged on his current job. By the way his tm is performing, you may be right.
I’m sure it’s Herman’s agent who is doing the talking at this point, not the HC himself. But perhaps it’s just that his players & coaches can already read the writing on the wall, so to speak.
In addition to the losses to Navy (somewhat understandable) & SMU (total head-scratcher), there was the close call against Tulsa. We all hear about how this or that coach has a great “football mind” or is an offensive or defensive “genius”. But in my opinion, the true measure of a head coach is how he responds to adversity, how he can find answers & motivate his team when things aren’t going so well. What matters is where a program stands after 5 years rather than 1 or 2 years. With regard to Herman, right now we just don’t know.
I really don’t understand why he would go to Texas to take a political job. It’s controlled by a bunch of wealthy donors who you have to keep happy. Considering the dumpster fire Mack Brown left, Strong really hasn’t been given enough time to clean up the program and get his system and players installed. Firing a coach in his 3rd season is ridiculous.
Agreed, on all points.
Right? Id give Strong more time to actually get his thing set up as compared to hiring Herman who just hasnt done enough, for me, yet
Herman would be silly to go to Austin. It’s a collegiate political cespool! Donors and alumni put so much pressure on the school that they dictate what happens! For better or worse. Charlie Strong was never given a real chance to do what he can. And it’s sad to see that Texas is practically naming a new coach while there is already a coach in the seat. They never learned from their ousting of Mack Brown. Either way, LSU would make a huge mistake looking outside Baton Rouge for their new HC. All they have to do is take the interim tag off Coach O!
yep… This news makes Alleva’s job a little easier…
LSU isn’t the same level of behind the scenes drama? LSU needs to throw about $6 million at Chip Kelly. Kelly has to have had his fill of NFL divas by now. His philosophy is a better fit for college
I don’t think Chip would be a good fit for LSU. We should pass on him.
Great. LSU needs a proven HC from a Power 5 school. This isn’t a training ground. This is a platform for national titles. We don’t want the next Kevin Dunkin. We want the next Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, etc.
If Texas wants to go with an experiment, more power to them.
Personally, I see Herman at one of two schools: Notre Dame or Baylor. Notre Dame is in need of a head coach despite what their AD says about Kelly. Herman would be a great candidate to turn the program back into what it once was. Baylor runs a similar offense to his in Houston, so there will be an easier learning curve. Also, Herman already has ties to recruiting in Texas, so that would help him.
I hope it doesn’t happen but I would think Dana Holgerson should be high on Baylor’s list. The job he has done at WVU is very underappreciated. WVU is not an easy place to recruit but he has them playing well and he and Briles come from the same coaching tree.
Holgerson also has ties to Texas having been OC at Texas Tech, Houston, and Ok st. He is also a free agent next season after WVU’s AD didn’t sign Holgerson to an extension this past off season.
I don’t know if Baylor’s interim HC wants the job permanently or not. But Baylor does have a really good one right now in Jim Grobe. West Virginia is playing well right now, but Dana Holgorson’s teams have been mediocre at best since 2012.
I’d take this news report with a grain of salt. Texas really likes to make things that aren’t happening seem like a done deal. Don’t forget that, on multiple occasions, Saban to Texas was “all but official”.
Benjamin Allbright is neither a reporter, nor does he have reliable sources. He tweets about popular subjects that sports nation is already talking about to gain attention and followers. How many of you have ever heard a reporter write, or talk about, a “big rumor”? This guy knows diddley squat and I can hardly believe that SDS would write an article based off what this idiot says.
Last I’ve heard is Strong has had a meeting with the School president which is kinda a big deal considering their AD is an interm and cant fire Strong, only the president.
lsu will be stuck with orgeron or some other washed up retread—they should have fired miles last year and hired herman.
Who is reporting this? Is it the same hack that was reporting Nick to Texas before Mack was let go?
to be fair, a deal with Saban was “all but done” with Texas a few years ago too…
No…..Strong”
