The connection has been discussed for nearly a week, but there’s reportedly been a step of progress between former LSU coach Les Miles and Kansas.

The job came open last week when administrators at Kansas announced that David Beaty wouldn’t continue in the job beyond this season. But Dennis Dodd at CBS Sports is reporting that Miles and Kansas have spoken about the opening after he was reported as a top candidate.

Kansas athletics director Jeff Long, formerly of Arkansas, has said he is looking for an experienced head coach, and would like to make the hire “sooner rather than later.”

Dodd reported that a FlexJet plane from Dallas carrying Long and Kansas deputy athletic director Sean Lester landed in Lawrence, Kansas, about about 6:20 p.m. ET. According to Dodd’s sources, it was scheduled to depart from Dallas to Baton Rouge at some point on Thursday but that flight was cancelled.

“There really isn’t a frontrunner,” Long told reporters on Sunday. “I’m going to be looking for a leader of young men, someone who has maybe a history and track record of building a program, because we have to build a program and it’s really important to do that.”

Dodd reported that some candidates could have enough leverage to get a six- or seven-year deal from Kansas considering the state of the program and the scope of the turnaround. When the firing was announced, Beaty was currently 6-39 nearing the end of his fourth season; he agreed to stay on for the remainder of this season. Kansas hasn’t had a winning season since 2008. This season, it snapped a nine-year road losing streak.

LSU was 114-34 under Miles, and won the BCS Championship in 2007.
