Chip Kelly has always been confident. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t be sympathetic.

The UCLA head coach made sure to make note of that LSU had gone through last week before being beaten 38-27 by the Bruins. LSU had to relocate to Houston last weekend and practice there while Hurricane Ida tore through Louisiana. The Tigers then flew to Pasadena on Thursday for Saturday’s game in the Rose Bowl.

Simply moving practice and game preparation might not have even been the toughest challenge for the Tigers. LSU players, coaches and support staff were surely thinking about their family and friends’ safety as they endured the storm back home.

“First off, the week that this teams gone through — LSU — with the hurricane and things like that,” Kelly reportedly said after the game, per On3. “Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody down there in Louisiana and what happened to them. Winning the game tonight is awesome for our team but there was some bigger things going on. And we understand that.”

That statement certainly carried a different tone than the one that made the news following the win.

“There may be some people surprised out there,” Kelly said, according to ESPN. “There wasn’t anybody surprised in our locker room because of the preparation that they put in this week.”

While there are obviously more important matters in Louisiana, the Tigers’ ongoing struggles will still be a topic of conversation for many LSU fans. After going 15-0 and winning the national championship in 2019, the Tigers are 5-6 in their last 11 games.
