Cam Ward was instrumental to Miami’s success all season long as an eventual Heisman Trophy finalist. He showed up once again in a big way during the Pop-Tarts Bowl. At least, for one half of the game.

In the first half against Iowa State, Ward was electric with 3 touchdowns on just 12 completions. That’s because defense was optional for both teams with Ward going 12-for-19 for 190 yards and 3 touchdowns before the break.

The Hurricanes rode that performance to a 31-28 halftime lead in a game that looked like Ward might capture MVP honors. However, he did not play in the second half of the game, yielding the quarterback spot to Emory Williams.

It’s unclear if the move was a pre-determined move for Mario Cristobal and Ward or a mid-game opt-out, but it was clearly a decision to avoid injury with the 2025 NFL Draft on the horizon. And Ward did not play the rest of the game, even with the game on the line.

Iowa State scored what would be the eventual game-winning touchdown inside a minute for the 42-41 lead. Even then, Ward did not return to action with a chance to play the hero for Miami.

Even with the NFL on the horizon, it was a move that did not resonate positively with many on social media. Ward was promptly called out by social media for sitting on the sidelines with the game in the balance.
