Starkville custard shop changes name of 'The Mullen' sundae to 'The Lateral Move'
When Dan Mullen left Mississippi State for Florida, the opinions of many people in Starkville, Miss., changed about how they viewed the former Bulldogs coach.
In fact, one custard shop even changed a sundae that was named after Mullen.
While living in Starkville, Mullen frequently visited Bop’s Frozen Custard and ordered the same custom sundae every time — vanilla concrete topped with chocolate syrup, caramel, chocolate chips and M&Ms. The shop even named it “The Mullen.”
However, as shared by Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated on Twitter on Wednesday, the shop has recently renamed that sundae to “The Lateral Move,” which is of course a tribute to Mullen’s 2014 quote in which he said going from Mississippi State to Florida was a “lateral move.”
At the time, Mullen was talking about former Bulldogs defensive coordinator Geoff Collins leaving the program for the Gators. Then, Mullen made the same move three years later.
Dan Mullen used to order the same off-menu creation each time he visited the Starkville frozen custard drive-thru called Bop’s: vanilla concrete, topped with chocolate syrup, caramel, chocolate chips and M&Ms.

On Saturday, Mullen returns to Starkville when Florida travels to take on Mississippi State. And if Mullen visits Bop’s, it will be interesting to see what he thinks of the name change for his favorite sundae.
The Bulldogs and Gators are set to kick off at 6 p.m. ET.
