Mississippi State destroyed Charleston Southern 49-0 in its season opener on Saturday.

Not only did the Buccaneers not score, but they barely were able to move the ball against new Mississippi State defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s defense.

The Bulldogs’ defense allowed under one yard per play Saturday. That’s a school record for State, and a pretty incredible feat, even against a bad opponent.

And for the record, as Mississippi State sports beat reporter Joel Coleman points out, this is a team that has been playing football for 118 years:

Charleston Southern’s offense finished the game with 33 yards. That included 18 rushing and 15 passing.

Not bad, Mr. Grantham. Fans in Starkville should be happy with that defensive effort.
