One of this season’s biggest mysteries in the SEC involves the situation involving quarterback Maty Mauk at Missouri.

Ranked as one of the league’s best at his position coming into his junior season, Mauk struggled early and was eventually suspended following the Tigers’ loss to Kentucky for a violation of team rules.

That discipline lasted a month before he was reinstated last week.

However, the Tigers announced on Sunday that Mauk was suspended a second time, this one lasting the remainder of the regular season.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirmed a report first made by the Mizzou Podcast ‘Mizzodcast’ that Mauk was involved in a scuffle early Thursday morning outside of The Field House, a bar in downtown Columbia. It appears that was the final straw for Gary Pinkel.

Mizzou’s head coach has been quiet on the issue.

“All my players trust me that I don’t ever talk about disciplinary issues since the day I got here …,” Pinkel said recently. “I know you want more information, but that’s why I don’t do it. I’ve been very consistent.”

Mauk’s had a tough season off the field. His father has battled stage three colorectal cancer and teammates say it has taken a toll on their quarterback. One day before his original suspension, Mauk traveled home to Springfield, Mo., to be with his father before his first surgery.
