Alabama baseball adds right-handed pitcher from transfer portal
Alabama added to its pitching staff on Thursday with its first transfer pledge.
Former Texas State reliever Matthew Tippie announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on social media. He’ll join the program with 1 season of eligibility remaining after spending 2 at Angelina College and 2 at Texas State. Tippie is a top 500 prospect in the 2025 MLB Draft, as well.
Tippie made 26 appearances out of the bullpen for Texas State during the 2025 season. He pitched 46 innings, finishing the year with a 4.11 ERA, a 2-2 record, and 1 save. Opponents hit .205 against him with 7 extra-base hits and 5 home runs. He had 73 strikeouts and 21 walks.
For his career with the Bobcats, Tippie struck out 100 batters and walked 34. He made 44 appearances, went 4-3 with 2 saves, and had an ERA of 4.54.
A righty, Tippie throws a fastball in the 91-94 mph range. Some of his highlights are below:
Alabama (41-18) wrapped up the 2025 season with a 0-2 showing in the Hattiesburg Regional last week. Tippie’s commitment is a crucial one for an Alabama team that is set to lose Braylon Myers and Carson Ozmer to graduation. Ozmer, a finalist for the NCBWA’s Stopper of the Year Award, set a program record for saves this past season with 17.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
