Kentucky baseball issues statement on controversial cancelation of mid-week contest
Kentucky Baseball has issued a statement regarding its decision to cancel a mid-week game against Northern Kentucky on Tuesday.
The statement cites “multiple extended delays over the weekend” as well as a “critically important” conference series against Arkansas this coming weekend as reasons for the move.
Kentucky is on the NCAA Tournament bubble as it enters the final week of the regular season. The Wildcats are 30-18 overall and are ranked No. 30 in the latest RPI update.

In recent weeks, there have been multiple instances of bubble teams opting to cancel mid-week contests against low-major opposition. It’s been speculated that bubble teams have canceled games against weak opposition in order to avoid a negative hit to their RPI and other metrics. This practice was called out in a memo on Monday by the Division I Baseball Oversight Committee.
The committee chair, Michael Alford, said in the memo that the selection committee would take note of canceled games for reasons other than inclement weather. Evaluations could have a “negative impact” on a team’s evaluation ahead of the NCAA Tournament selection process.
The memo was shared by Cal State Bakersfield head coach Jordon Banfield:
Boston College and Virginia Tech also each canceled nonconference games against low-majors for this week.
