Mississippi State mercy-rules Mizzou, advances to quarterfinal of SEC Tournament
Mississippi State is moving on.
The Bulldogs beat Mizzou 12-2 in 7 innings, triggering the 10-run mercy rule. This was a close game for much of the morning as the Bulldogs held a 4-2 lead before exploding for 8 runs in the bottom of the 6th.
Mississippi State‘s scoring in the 6th was bookended by a pair of homers from Vytas Valincius. The second blast was a 3-run shot which put the Bulldogs up by 10 runs. The game ended after Mizzou’s offense was blanked in the top of the 7th inning.
This was a dominant showing for a Mississippi State team that has hosting aspirations this year. The Bulldogs entered the week as the No. 14 overall seed in D1Baseball’s latest Field of 64 projection.

Ending the game early will certainly help Mississippi State keep its best arms fresh for the remainder of the week in Hoover. Tomas Valincius started the game for the Bulldogs and allowed just 1 earned run over 6 innings of work.
As for Mizzou, this loss ends the Tigers’ season. They are under .500 on the year and are ranked outside of the top 100 nationally in RPI.
Mississippi State will face No. 1-seeded Georgia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
