No. 5 Georgia evens series with extra-innings win over No. 17 Ole Miss
Every weekend series in the SEC feels like it could go either way. That is the case in Oxford on Sunday, thanks to a split doubleheader on Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon, No. 17 Ole Miss erased an 8-0 deficit and beat No. 5 Georgia 10-8 on the back of 5 home runs. It appeared the Rebels were going to win in comeback fashion again in the nightcap, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Will Furniss 2-run homer. The Bulldogs finally pulled ahead in the 14th, though, on a Tre Phelps solo shot before winning 9-7 in that frame.
Georgia (33-11, 14-6 SEC) and Ole Miss (31-19, 11-9 SEC) combined to hit 12 home runs in their doubleheader. Nine of those round-trippers came from the Rebels, who saw Will Furniss (3), Austin Fawley (2) and Dom Decker (2) each go yard multiple times in the contests. Each of the Bulldogs’ homers came in their late-night victory.
After an incredible double dose to open the weekend, Georgia and Ole Miss are back in action Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs are expected to send Dylan Vigue to the mound, while the Rebels project to counter with Taylor Rabe. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m. E.T. (SEC Network+).
