North Carolina is well-positioned to play for the national championship. The No. 5 national seed Tar Heels are the first team to 2-0 in this year’s College World Series.

Playing in the winner’s bracket, UNC defeated West Virginia 5-2 on Sunday night. Carolina now gets 2 days off before it has the chance to play for a spot in the CWS Finals.

The Tar Heels will next play West Virginia or Troy on Wednesday. Another Carolina win puts UNC in the championship series. A win by WVU or Troy would force a winner-take-all game on Thursday.

On Friday, starter Jason DeCaro pitched 6.2 innings, and Caden Glauber handled the final 2.1 innings in relief. UNC used 3 pitchers on Sunday, with Ryan Lynch handling the first 4.2 innings before Walker McDuffie pitched 3.2 innings. Glauber recorded the final 2 outs, only needing 9 pitches.

The other half of the bracket is being called the “SEC invitational,” with 4 teams from the conference fighting for a spot in the CWS Finals. The Omaha field will shrink to 6 teams at the conclusion of Monday afternoon’s Alabama vs. Texas elimination game. Oklahoma and Georgia will play in the winner’s bracket game, with the victor becoming the other 2-0 team in the CWS.
