Tennessee baseball is off to a hot start in defense of the first national title in program history for the Vols. On Friday, Tony Vitello’s squad kept things rolling with a dominant win, but it was a special night for the pitching staff.
Offensively, Tennessee registered 4 home runs and 7 total extra-base hits in scoring 12 runs against St. Bonaventure. Gavin Kilen and Cannon Peebles led the way with 3 RBI while Andrew Fischer and Dalton Bargo delivered 2 RBI apiece.
However, the story of this game came down to a Vols pitching staff that pitched a brilliant shutout. And without run-rule limits in play, Tennessee still managed to deliver a full-length no-hitter.
Liam Doyle opened the game and continued his dominant run to begin the season for the Vols. He has allowed just 1 run across his first 4 starts but was lights-out on Friday with 5.2 innings pitched without a hit while registering 13 strikeouts with just 2 walks.
Doyle’s stretch on the mound set the tone for the evening with Tanner Franklin, Brandon Arvidson, Brayden May and Michael Sharman keeping things rolling. All combined, Tennessee’s pitching staff struck out 16 Bonnies with 4 walks while securing the no-hitter. It is the first no-hitter for the Vols since 2002 and the 9th all-time in the program’s history.
Here’s how the final out went down:
The victory moves Tennessee to 14-0 to start the season with a return trip to the College World Series in mind for the program. The latest D1Baseball rankings this week had the Vols at No. 2 (behind LSU), but Baseball America had Tennessee at No. 1 as the current team to beat in the national championship race.
At DraftKings, Tennessee is the current favorite to win the SEC title (+200) and the national championship (+700) with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Be sure to use your favorite TN sports betting apps to track everything related to the Vols all season long.
