The Texas Longhorns have their starting catcher for 2027.

On Saturday, Texas baseball added a commitment from Saint Mary’s transfer prospect Ian Armstrong, one of the best west coast players in the college game.

As you can see above, Armstrong posted some strong numbers for the Gaels last season, hitting .351 (slashed .351/.416/.654) with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs. To boot, Armstrong added 80 hits and 17 doubles. In addition, Armstrong graded out as one of the top defensive catchers in the country with a .995 fielding percentage.

The all-WCC catcher will be entering his junior year in Austin after playing 2 seasons in Moraga. In 2025, Armstrong was named to the WCC All-Freshman Team.

Perhaps most intriguing to Texas fans, Armstrong was instrumental in Saint Mary’s upset win over UCLA in the Los Angeles Regional this year. His 2-out single tied the game with the Bruins to go along with a 3rd inning home run in a 6-5 win.

Finally, Armstrong is considered a top 30 player in the 2027 MLB Draft.
