Anonymous ACC coach says no one ‘feared’ Hubert Davis
At least one ACC head coach is not happy with North Carolina‘s decision to part ways with Hubert Davis.
College basketball insider Jeff Goodman spoke with a coach, who was not named, who said that he hoped the Tar Heels would keep Davis “forever” because he kept the program from reaching its potential.
“I had really hoped he was the coach forever,” the coach told Goodman. “No one in the ACC was scared of him. I’m worried that they hire someone really good now because if you get a big-time guy at UNC, they could be right there with Duke again.”

That sentiment is a brutal indictment of Davis’s tenure at North Carolina. He did lead the Tar Heels to a National Championship Game appearance in his first season at the helm, but his other campaigns were underwhelming.
UNC missed the tournament entirely in 2023, exited in the Sweet 16 as a No. 1 seed in 2024, and lost in the first round in both 2025 and 2026.
North Carolina is expected to pursue high-profile candidates to find its next head coach. Here’s a list of the current favorites for the role on Kalshi:
