With UNC and Hubert Davis parting ways, several high-profile candidates have been brought up as potential candidates for the job. One name that has been brought up is Billy Donovan.

Donovan hasn’t coached in the college game since 2015. Donovan started his career as a Kentucky assistant before becoming the Marshall head coach in 1994. After just two seasons at Marshall, Donovan became the head coach at Florida. In 18 seasons at Florida, Donovan was able to win back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2006 and 2007, four SEC Tournaments, and six SEC regular-season championships.

Andrew Jones of 247Sports had this to say when asked about Donovan potentially becoming the next UNC head coach:

“A lot of people are very interested in [Billy Donovan] because one of the revelations about Hubert in the past few weeks is that maybe he didn’t really have the chops to have this job,” he said. “It’s such a difficult job. It’s such a high-stakes job, and they want to bring in somebody that can sit in that seat and handle it, and a lot of money people believe Billy Donovan is somebody who can do that.”

Most recently, Donovan has been the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Donovan took the job back in 2020 after failing to agree on a contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
