BYU star Richie Saunders has had a great season this season, helping the Cougars make the NCAA Tournament as a No. 6 seed headed into a matchup with VCU. He has earned a new nickname though, as he is now being dubbed the “Tot King.”

The reason he has earned this name is because he is the great-grandson of Francis Nephi “Nephi” Grigg, who co-founded the company with his brother Golden Grigg in 1952. They invented “tater tots” in 1953. The company made an announcement that they were teaming up with Saunders to give away free tots if BYU knocks off the Rams.

“We’re teaming up with basketball hotshot Richie Saunders, the great-grandson of Ore-Ida founder and inventor of Tater Tots, to give away free tots if Richie’s team wins today,” the company posted on X. “If they win, the countdown for our 30-minute ‘Tot Clock’ will begin at the link in our IG bio post-game!”

Ore-Ida posted a link on an Instagram post that if the Cougars are able to win the game, they will post a link where fans can be able to secure some free tots.

Saunders led the team in scoring with 16.0 PPG, while shooting 43.3% from the 3-point line.He is one of many athletes all across the country that are capitalizing on this new era of college basketball and college sports in general. Athletes all across the country are able to find partnership opportunities with thousands of companies. Most athletes just aren’t related to the inventors of national companies.
