Former Auburn Tiger Chad Baker-Mazara, who transferred to USC this past offseason, is no longer with the Trojans basketball program. The school announced the news on Sunday afternoon following USC’s loss to Nebraska Saturday night. He played 19 minutes and exited early due to an apparent injury.
Baker-Mazara, who is 26 years old and just effectively finished his 5th season in college basketball, appeared in 26 games for the Trojans this season, averaging 18.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. At this time, it is not known why Baker-Mazara and the Trojans have parted ways.
Of course, Baker-Mazara was a key piece for Bruce Pearl’s Final Four team at Auburn last season, though he struggled during the actual tournament. He then decided to leave before Pearl’s retirement, opting to join Eric Musselman in Los Angeles through the transfer portal.
The season started pretty well for Baker-Mazara and the Trojans, too. USC began the year 12-1 before getting blasted by Michigan and Michigan State in back-to-back games. Those 2 uppercuts sent the Trojans reeling: USC went on to lose 3 of its next 6 and sits at 18-11 with 2 Big Ten games remaining, at Washington and vs. UCLA. USC’s most recent loss was its 5th straight, and the Trojans NCAA tournament hopes are plummeting as a result.
The Trojans currently have an 8% chance to reach the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament, per Kalshi. Here’s a look at the odds among Big Ten bubble teams:
