ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Williams attended Duke University. He was a 2-time All-American, Naismith Player of the Year and national champion as a Blue Devil. But in recent years, he has acted like he once donned Carolina Blue. In 2024, he claimed he’d transfer to North Carolina if he were in the transfer portal. And on Saturday morning, he committed an even greater sin against his former school.

On Saturday’s episode of College GameDay, Williams led the North Carolina fans at the event in a Tar Heel chant.

“I just wanna witness this for one second, just to see how it feels, cause I never usually do this,” Williams said before breaking into the cheer.

Duke fans, understandably, were not thrilled with Williams’ actions. They, along with other users, spoke on the move in the comments. One fan claimed Williams “wants to be Pat McAfee so bad it’s pathetic.”

Having respect for your rival is one thing; doing their chant in advance of a matchup with your alma mater is another. In no universe would Cam Newton be caught saying “Roll Tide.” Same with Nick Saban and “War Eagle.”

Fortunately for Duke’s “Brotherhood,” they still have loyalty from someone on the GameDay panel. Jay Bilas called Williams “a suck up” once Williams wrapped up his betrayal. The Blue Devils (-5.5) and Tar Heels tip off from Chapel Hill this evening (6:30 p.m. E.T.) on ESPN.
