With a Sweet 16 berth on the line, the 5-seeded Vanderbilt Commodores take on the 4-seeded Nebraska Cornhuskers, and ESPN Analytics is predicting that we are in for a good one.
No. 5 seed Vanderbilt is coming off a 78-68 win over the 12-seed McNeese Cowboys. The Commodores avoided the upset in the daunted 12-versus-5 matchup and have earned a dance with the Cornhuskers. Sophomore guard Tyler Tanner led the way for the Commodores in the first round with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The Commodores will have to do a better job of rebounding the basketball against the Cornhuskers. They gave up 16 offensive rebounds to the Cowboys.
On the other side, Nebraska dominated in its first-round matchup with Troy, winning by 29 points. Pryce Sandfort led the way with 23 points, and he did so by attempting only one 2-point shot. The junior forward shot 7-of-12 from 3-point land.
In a game that seemingly could go either way, ESPN Analytics is giving the slight edge to the Commodores to move on to the Sweet 16 with a 53.2% chance of winning this matchup. That means ESPN is giving the Cornhuskers a 46.8% chance of moving on.
This would be the Commodores’ first Sweet 16 appearance since 2012 under head coach Kevin Stallings.
