The college sports world is reacting to the end of Bruce Pearl’s legendary coaching career. In a heartfelt farewell shared with Auburn family on Tuesday, Pearl announced that his time at The Plains had come to a close with his retirement, leaving a behind a legacy that will resonate for years to come.

The War Eagle community responded with an outpouring of love and admiration. Among those expressing their gratitude was one of pearls closest allies during his time together at Auburn – former head football coach Gus Malzahn.

“Bruuuce! What a career. So happy for you my friend. You are a true Auburn legend! Enjoy retirement. See you soon on the course this summer.” Malzahn tweeted, capturing the essence of their friendship.

Malzahn served as head football coach from 2013 to 2020, while Pearl joined the Tigers in 2014. Together, they forged not just successful programs but also a bond built on mutual support and respect. Under Malzahn, the Tigers clinched in SEC championship and made an unforgettable run to the 2013 BCS national championship game. Their partnership extended beyond wins. Early in Pearl’s tenure, Malzahn’s football program played a pivotal role in boosting basketball recruiting efforts during a challenging time when the Auburn basketball coach faced restrictions due to a no-show clause from his time at Tennessee.

Even after Malzahn departure from Auburn their camaraderie remained strong, with Pearl continuing to offer support. Malzahn coached at UCF from 2021-24.

While Malzahn may currently be focused on his role as offensive coordinator for No. 8 Florida State—where he is helping guide them through an undefeated start at 3-0—he still finds time for friends like Pearl. As he prepares for this week’s matchup against Virginia, don’t be surprised if you spot these two legends enjoying some leisure time together on the golf course soon enough.
