Jahmai Mashack is still doing Jahmai Mashack things for a Tennessee-based basketball team.
Despite the Memphis Grizzlies’ loss to Golden State, the former Vols guard posted a career night in 22 minutes of action. Mashack finished Monday night’s game an efficient 8-10 from the field with 17 points, 2 steals and a pair of rebounds. And, of course, he did all the stuff that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet that got him drafted to the NBA in the first place.
Mashack was named Memphis’ Player of the Game for his excellent outing off the bench.
Mashack’s 17 points, incredibly, is the most he’s ever scored in a high-level basketball game, college or pro. The former Tennessee guard scored 16 points in a loss to Kentucky back in 2023.
That’s what makes this a noteworthy performance from Mashack. His defense was always going to translate to the NBA. The question was whether or not he’d be able to develop consistent offense to justify his spot on the floor against the best of the best. It’s still quite early, but Mashack is shooting a respectable 45% from the floor in his first season – and 33% from range. So far, that’s been enough to earn 10 minutes per game.
If he keeps developing offensively like he did Monday night, Mashack is going to play a lot of basketball in the NBA. Memphis plays next on Wednesday night, facing off against the Nuggets in Denver at 9 p.m. ET.
