Former Tennessee guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie posted another strong Summer League outing Monday night for the San Antonio Spurs, even despite a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Competing in the California Classic, Gillespie dropped a team-high 19 points with 6 assists, 2 steals and just 2 turnovers across 31 minutes of action. The Greeneville, Tennessee native was an efficient 7-14 from the field and 5-9 from 3-point range. Monday night’s performance is an improvement from his first game of Summer League, where he dropped a solid 8 assists with 10 points on 3-17 shooting.

It’s Summer League and still very, very early, but it isn’t hard to see the NBA upside in Gillespie. He doesn’t look frazzled. Gillespie gave up just 3 turnovers with 5 steals across his first 60 minutes of action, showed improvement across the board from Game 1 to Game 2 and absolutely let it fly on Monday night with five 3-pointers — perhaps the reason he was brought to SAS in the first place.
The former Vol will be back in action on Thursday at the start of the Vegas Summer League.
