Say what you want about Kentucky basketball head coach Mark Pope, but the guy can take some heat.
Kentucky has not had a dominant offseason. The Wildcats missed on No. 1 overall prospect Tyran Stokes, who instead chose Kansas, as well as Syracuse transfer Donnie Freeman who picked St. John’s. Top target Rob Wright III elected to return to BYU after taking a visit to Lexington, and many other official visits elected for different avenues upon leaving Lexington.
And while Kentucky has landed some good transfer additions such as Furman’s Alex Wilkins and Washington’s Zoom Diallo, the Wildcats’ 2026 transfer class hardly compares to hauls from rival programs like Louisville and Tennessee. As you can guess, the online reaction has been largely negative.
Instead of ignoring the criticism, Pope decided he’d face it head on.
On Tuesday, Pope posted a video message to X, prompting fans to ask questions in the comments, promising that he’d answer some of them across the coming days.
Wednesday afternoon, Pope made good on his promise. Check it out below:

In the video, Pope answers a question concerning Malachi Moreno, explaining that Kentucky looks to support him as he explores his options in the NBA Draft.
“This is where basketball dreams come true, and Malachi has 2 dreams,” Pope said. “He’s dreaming of hanging a banner at Kentucky, and he’s dreaming of playing in the NBA. We’re supporting him chasing both of those.”
Pope also fields questions relating to outside programs using Kentucky as NIL leverage, the changes being made after whiffing on several top recruits and a question that poses, simply, “Where ya been?”
