Matt McMahon comments on LSU future after triple OT loss to Texas A&M in regular-season finale
It flew under the radar because of other action across the conference, but Texas A&M and LSU played a fantastic game on Saturday. The Aggies triumphed over the Tigers 94-91 in triple overtime, simultaneously clinching the No. 6 seed in the SEC Tournament for themselves and sending LSU into the basement (No. 16 seed).
Head coach Matt McMahon now has a 60-69 overall record in Baton Rouge. His SEC record in particular (17-55) has left a lot to be desired. Following the loss to Texas A&M, McMahon talked about the possibility of his time with the Tigers coming to an end.
“This is my 30th season in college basketball… I’ve just been incredibly blessed. Have absolutely nothing but gratitude, appreciation for this opportunity,” McMahon said postgame, per NOLA.com. “With the 30 years of experience, I also understand what comes with the job from an expectation standpoint… I absolutely love LSU. I love our core group that returns next year… we have great administration and leadership team here at LSU… I’ll respect whatever decisions they make moving forward. But, you know, I love the opportunity.”
McMahon could finish at/above .500 for the second time in his 4-year tenure if LSU goes on a conference tournament run. The Tigers’ journey starts on Wednesday versus No. 9 seed Kentucky (12:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network).
