Toraya Reid, the sister of former LSU star and current Minnesota Timberwolves basketball player Naz Reid, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend this weekend.
According to the Associated Press, police responded to reports of shots fired at the Paragon apartment complex in Jackson, NJ at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Once on the scene, officers found 28-year-old Toraya Reid unresponsive. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said Reid had been shot multiple times.
Upon locating Reid, police reportedly saw 29-year-old Shaquille Green running down a road. He was taken into custody without incident. Billhimer said Reid and Green were “in a dating relationship,” per the Associated Press.
Green has been charged with murder and is also facing two weapons charges.
Naz Reid, 26, has spent the entirety of his six-year NBA career with the Timberwolves. The undrafted free agent joined Minnesota on a two-way contract in 2019 after averaging 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds as a freshman at LSU. He quickly established himself as an NBA-level player in 30 appearances as a rookie and held a regular spot in the Timberwolves’ rotation from 2020-22.
In 2023, Reid signed a three-year, $42 million extension that included a player option for 2025-26. The 6-foot-9 big man then took his game to another level, averaging 13.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in roughly 24 minutes per game. Reid connected on 41.4% of his 3-point attempts that season in route to the league’s Sixth Man of the Year award.
Reid followed his 6MOY campaign by averaging 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in nearly 28 minutes per game last year. He opted out of his contract, but re-upped with the T-Wolves on a five-year, $125 million pact in July. He could reach free agency again in 2030 by declining his player option, but his new deal officially expires in 2031.
