The NCAA Division I Cabinet approved a rule on Wednesday that will prohibit men’s basketball coaches and their staffs from attending games involving other teams.

That rule will apply to NCAA Division I preseason, regular-season and conference tournament games.

Under the men’s basketball umbrella, team-specific staff members would still be able to attend NCAA championship as well as other postseason games.

This exception to the aforementioned new rule would be in place because the NCAA championship or postseason contest would be part of an event in which the team whose coaches are involved are also competing at the time.

The other defined exception to this new rule would be in place if the game in question involves a family member of the coach or staff member as a participant.

According to the explanation of the new rule, the “respective oversight committees supported the rule change as a means of reducing in-person recruiting of potential transfers, with the hope of deterring coaches or team staff members from engaging in tampering behavior before a student-athlete has been entered into the transfer portal during their respective sport’s notification-of-transfer window.”

Rules aside involving basketball coaches attending other Division I games, those coaches will be trying to get their teams in contention for a trip to next year’s Final Four.
