Oklahoma basketball adds commitment from G-League center

Oklahoma basketball became the latest college program to add a commitment from a former G-League player on Monday evening. The Sooners have added a pledge from former Wizards G-Leaguer Akoldah Gak, a 23-year old South Sudanese-Australian big man.

Specifically, Gak played for the Capital City Go-Gos, averaging 7.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game this past season after signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Wizards a little under a year ago. Gak was waived and subsequently played for the Go-Gos.

He is considered a mobile lob threat and a good rebounder who stands at 6-foot-11 and 225 pounds, adding some depth to a frontcourt that already includes Kai Rogers, Derrion Reid (who announced his return last week) and Louisville transfer Khani Rooths.

Gak hails from Australia and therefore took an NBL route rather than working through the NCAA. Starting in 2020 he signed with the Illawarra Hawks of the NBL before signing a 2-year deal with the Cairns Taipans in April of 2023.

Oklahoma is looking to make some noise in Porter Moser’s 6th season in Norman. The Sooners have made the NCAA Tournament just once across the past 6 years, so it goes without saying that this is a key year for the former Loyola Chicago head coach.
